recent year. The figures show a
rise of 4.65 million in the
number of Catholics in Africa,
3.08 million in Asia, and 6.83
million in the Americas.

Peres confirmed that he had
renewed an invitation for the
Pope to visit Israel, but no
date was discussed, he said the Pope “believes that he can come next
year."

The 21 South Koreans, members of a church, were captured by the
Taliban on July 19. Initially there were 23, but two has been killed.
The Pope observed that “the practice by armed groups of manipulating
innocent persons for promoting their own goals is becoming wide
spread.”
